Karachi to Islamabad: Road Trip Essentials

Motorway M5

There’s just something about hitting the road with friends and family that feels so serene, isn’t there? I’ve made the journey from Karachi to Islamabad several times myself, for various reasons – work, family, and simply for the love of travel. Here’s some essential advice to make your trip a smooth ride.

First off, the timing of your departure from Karachi is crucial. While it may vary depending on your preferences and trip agenda, it’s generally recommended to leave early enough to reach Sukkur during daylight hours. The stretch between Hyderabad and Sukkur lacks a motorway, so navigating through traffic, potholes, and rushed drivers is best done when visibility is high. Plus, driving on the motorway at night, especially during summers, can be taxing on both the driver and the vehicle.

Now, let’s talk about landmarks. Pakistan boasts some incredible sights, perfect for history buffs, culture enthusiasts, and avid photographers alike. If you’re keen on exploring, consider making a pit stop at Uch Sharif. The vertically cut tombs of saints, like Bibi Jaiwandi, are truly awe-inspiring. They’re just a short drive from the M5 motorway interchange, so even if you’re pressed for time, allocate an extra hour to witness these historical and religious marvels.

And that’s not all – there’s a slew of landmarks worth visiting, such as Bhong Mosque, Digikot Fort, and the Katas Raj Temples. But I’ll delve into those in another blog post.

If you’re planning to break up the journey with an overnight stay, Sukkur is a viable option. With accommodations ranging from Pearl Continental Hotel to cozy guesthouses, you’re spoiled for choice. Plus, the hospitality of the locals rivals, if not surpasses, that of major cities – a delightful bonus for travelers.

Of course, one can’t overlook the financial aspect. The cost of your trip will largely hinge on fuel prices, which, unfortunately, seem to be on a perpetual rise in Pakistan. Depending on your vehicle’s fuel efficiency, expect to make the journey to Islamabad on roughly three tanks of fuel.

In conclusion, a road trip from Karachi to Islamabad is a quintessential experience that everyone should embark upon at least once. And while we’re on the topic of considerations…
