When choosing the best city for a traveler to live in Pakistan, several factors come into play: access to travel destinations, infrastructure, transport costs, and overall living expenses. For me, Islamabad stands out due to its accessibility and strategic location, offering a gateway to numerous travel opportunities.
Islamabad’s location is ideal for professionals who seize every travel opportunity. Whether it’s a weekend, a day trip, or a longer vacation, Islamabad serves as a perfect launchpad. Here are some places to explore if you’re living in or visiting Islamabad.
Day Trips
Within the city and its outskirts, there are several spots perfect for day trips. Golra Station, built in 1882 by the British Empire, is a must-see. This historical station now houses a museum featuring old engines and bogies, one of which was used by Muhammad Ali Jinnah. It’s perfect for history buffs and photographers alike.
For those seeking a bit more adventure, Rawat Fort and Khanpur Dam are excellent choices. Rawat Fort, though not as grand as other forts, is rich in history. According to the blue plaque on-site, it was built by the Ghakkar tribe. The fort features small rooms, graves, and a baradari where meetings and festivities were held. Nearby, the Mankiala Stupa is also worth a visit.
You can also explore Katas Raj, the Taxila ruins, or the Takht Bai monastery, each offering a unique glimpse into Pakistan’s rich history.

Overnight Trips
For a serene hillside escape, consider spending a night or two in Thandiani or Nathia Gali. These spots are ideal for a quick weekend getaway, far enough from Islamabad’s hustle but close enough for a short drive. My personal favorite is Thandiani, which offers a perfect retreat in both summer and winter. Just a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Islamabad, it’s an ideal spot for a peaceful weekend.
Extended Vacations
Even though there are flights and bus tours from Lahore and Karachi to Hunza and Skardu, let’s face it, the cost and time involved can make you think twice. Both of these factors can be significantly reduced if you live in Islamabad. Living in Islamabad makes planning and executing trips to Pakistan’s northern areas far easier compared to other cities. Additionally, it’s more convenient to travel to Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan or as far as Sukkur, where the motorway ends, it’s simply easier from Islamabad. Living in Islamabad opens up many more travel options compared to any other city in Pakistan.

And as the infrastructure improves, such as the Swat Motorway, Islamabad will continue to become an even better city to live in for travelers.
